Hope is the Thing features the original artwork from the book Hope is the Thing, written by Johanna Bell, illustrated by Erica Wagner and published in February 2023 by Allen & Unwin. Related paintings, collages, drawings and limited-edition prints and panels from the book will also be on display.

One of three Select Exhibitions held each year by VAS. Votes cast by exhibiting artists are used to decide the list of candidates for the Artist of the Year Award Exhibition. The Winter Exhibition features prizes of Senior Art Supplies vouchers to the value of: 1st prize, $600. 2nd prize, $150. 3rd prize $100. Sculpture prize, $150.
This exhibition is to show that painting subjects can come about from what people might think is quite ordinary, everything has its own special something. We all see the world in our own way. Each artist has their own way of interpreting the subject and expresses them their way.
This exhibition showcases the range of artistic practices and mediums that are taught at the VAS Art School. Encompassing oil, watercolour, pastel, drawing, acrylic, gouache and sculpture, both students and teachers works on show will reveal the diversity and creativity within the school.
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
