Classes

The Victorian Artists Society offers art classes catering to students of all experience levels, from beginners to professional artists, across a wide range of mediums including oil, watercolour, acrylic, and drawing. Classes cover a range of techniques such as portraiture & figure from life, landscape and still life. Daytime, afternoon, evening and weekend classes are conducted in the historic VAS studio and are taught by highly regarded artists in their specific mediums.

Students must be above 16 years of age. Some of our classes only accept students above 18 years of age so please read the class description carefully at the time of booking.

Do classes run on public holidays?

Unless otherwise arranged by your teacher, classes run on public holidays. This ensures an even 10 week term offered to every student and an equal contract offered to every teacher.

Do I need to buy everything on the materials list for the first class?

If you’re not sure about sourcing everything on the materials list, we recommend you bring along a limited selection of items from each category on the list. For example, bring along a few sheets of the recommended paper or one canvas board, only a few brushes, and a limited selection of paints. The first class is always an opportunity for you to talk with your teacher about materials and clarify what will be necessary when. If you still have any questions, please email reception and we will check with your specific teacher as to their recommendations.

Do you offer children's classes?
Is a refund available if I cancel my booking for a class or workshop?

If a class is cancelled by VAS we will refund the cost of the class or credit that amount to a future class.

The VAS Art School is only able to offer refunds for course withdrawals made 14 days before the first class of term. Unfortunately, we cannot offer a refund or credit made after this time.

Credits are valid for up to 12 months after the date of issue. Please contact the office directly to use a credit.

Studio Terms and Conditions

Updated 27 November 2023.

The below terms and conditions apply to any and all purchases made within the VAS Art School. By making a purchase of a class or workshop, you agree that you have read and accepted our terms and conditions.

This policy applies to all VAS Art School enrolments from 27 November 2023.

REFUNDS & CREDITS

  • The VAS Art School is only able to offer refunds for course withdrawals made 14 days before the first class of term. Unfortunately, we cannot offer a refund or credit made after this time. We do not provide refunds for missed classes within the term.

  • Credits are valid for up to 12 months after the date of issue. Please contact the office directly to use a credit.

CLASS CANCELLATION & NUMBERS

  • Term classes may be cancelled if there are insufficient enrolments (less than 5 students). In this instance, students can choose between the options of a full refund, credit, or transfer of enrolment to a different available class.

  • Teachers for classes are subject to change due to availability. All efforts will be taken to ensure the quality and content of the class is maintained.

WORK IN THE STUDIO

  • VAS Gallery does not take responsibility for work left in the studio. We request all artists retrieve their work in a timely period (suggested: 2 weeks).

WORKING WITH A LIFE MODEL

  • If your class will be working with a model, please review and adhere to the Life Model Society Working Conditions

Artists are especially reminded not to enter or exit the studio while a model is posing, and not to use their phone while the model is in the room.

Any requests for poses etc. should be directed to your monitor or teacher as the facilitator. Please keep a respectful 1.5 metre distance from the model unless you have permission to enter their personal space.

Please don't hesitate to contact us via email (admin@vasgallery.org.au) if you would like to discuss this policy.

When do bookings become available for classes?
Where can I buy materials for an art class?

Each of our classes at the VAS Art School have a recommended materials list for students to use throughout the course—we recommend students source their own materials so that they can customise their kits to their own liking. We have a limited selection of essential art supplies for sale at the studio. For a full range we recommend quality art suppliers such as Seniors Art Supplies or Eckersley's.
