“I take pictures in order to try to make sense of the world around me. I sequence photos taken within a short or arbitrarily designated period of time in an attempt to be more conscious of how I got to where I am in life, be it on a physical or an emotional level.”
Justin L. Labelle's photographic work autobiographically explores the interplay of symbols and signs.
His completed series are mosaics of fragmented moments. Though personal and introspective in nature, his sequenced images also invite contemplation on truth, memory and authenticity in regards to the self-curated documentation of 21st century life.
Justin is a French-Canadian who's recently moved to Melbourne after living in Sweden for the last 8 years. He is an art teacher, photographer and avid reader.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a double major in English and Visual Arts from the University of Ottawa, he travelled across Canada in the hopes of documenting the country. Finding few answers but plenty of experience, he then worked on a cruise ship as a photographer travelling from New Zealand to Alaska. Seeking better working conditions, he became an art teacher and continues to travel and document his experiences.
It is only later in life that he became interested in painting. He is self-taught.
