This work is from a suite of new compositions informed by the theme Hope in the Dark, inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s book of the same title. As our world faces multiple crises, the future can seem dark, motivating an intrinsic desire for things to improve. Reflecting on 'the dark' Solnit surmises that it ought to be viewed not as something terrible, but inscrutable – a darkness found as much in the womb, as in the grave. Solnit invites consideration of ‘the dark’ as an opportunity to cultivate an imagination adequate to the task of overcoming the strangeness and dangers of our present world and envisaging and achieving a better future.
