This work is inspired by one of the 2900 glaciers found in New Zealand, most of which are located in the Southern Alps. These beautiful sculptures of nature are spread across more than 1 hectare in size. The magnificence of these glaciers cannot be understated nor can the major changes they are undergoing due to climate change. Since the 1970s, around 200 of NZ's glaciers have been lost. The larger and iconic Fox and Franz Joseph glaciers have not been spared the impact of a warming climate and are receding at an alarming rate. Franz Joseph, for example, has been receding at a rate of between 10m and 20m per year, and stands as one of the fastest retreating glaciers in the world. The aim of this work is to remind us all of the unconscionable threat to these iconic landmarks and the need to do whatever we can - no matter how small- to protect them.
