'Rabbit tail grass on sand dunes III’ (from my Waitarere Beach series) is inspired by my childhood memories of Waitarere Beach in the North Island of New Zealand. The warm shifting sands and soft ‘rabbit tail’ grasses intrigued me as a child and provided a dream-like playground in which to explore and find many wondrous items strewn along the beach edge – patterned driftwood, shells, seaweed, waterworn glass pieces and, not least, remains of the Hydrabad (shipwrecked in 1878). ‘Sand dunes’ also stands as a metaphor for the sand-like quality of time and its capacity both to cover up and reveal remnants of the past.
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
