‘Of this land I’ (from my Ngātoiorangi and the Coming of Fire series) is inspired by the wondrous geothermal areas surrounding the place where I grew up. These areas included the rumbling steam bore fields of Wairakei; the geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pools and silica terraces of Orakei Korako and Rotorua; the iconic crater chronicling the devastating Mount Tawarewa eruption of 1886; and the three active volcanoes (Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro) at the southern end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand. Despite their intriguing structure these landmarks are a potent reminder of the terrifying power of nature.
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
