This work is inspired by the plight of the world's glaciers, which are retreating at an unprecedented and devastating rate. Scientists are warning that many of the world’s magnificent glaciers are at risk of being lost forever. There is a consensus among today’s scientists that the melting of the glaciers is the world’s ‘canary in the coalmine’, whose warning signals we ignore at our peril. Artists have an important role to play in promoting environmental ethics. This is because art is much more than just presentation. As Australian Professor of Environmental Law, Benjamin Richardson, has correctly contended, art also ‘fuels human imagination, to re-imagine relationships with the natural world, to bring new meanings and creatively forge new solutions’. We need urgently to find solutions to protect the world’s and nature’s beautiful ice sculptures before they disappear.
