Where is the Exit? is a painting series created between 2020 and 2025, born from the collective fatigue of Melbourne’s prolonged lockdowns and the seemingly endless disruption of train delays, replacement buses, and major tunnel construction works. The works capture individuals suspended in transit — waiting, detoured, delayed — reflecting a broader sense of uncertainty and frustration during that period. What began as spontaneous doodles and instinctive squiggles evolved into fully realised characters and compositions, echoing the playful transformation process of Mr Squiggle. Beneath the humour lies a deeper tension: the feeling of searching for forward movement in a time when progress felt perpetually obstructed.
