This painting is of Marija Patterson's sculpture "Over the Sea to a New Beginning". The sculpture depicts Marija's mother sitting in a small boat with three birds perched on the sides of the boat, representing Marija and two of her siblings. Inside the boat beside her mother (out of view) are precious eggs yet to be hatched - representing the new siblings to come in the new land they sail to. I am very taken by this work for both its beauty and how it resonates with my own father's story on immigrating to Australia from Europe.
