THE FRENCH FOUNTAIN Near the Royal Exhibition Building CARLTON GARDENS Watercolour Painted in 2019 I think for Artist’s the City of Melbourne has a rich History on which to draw inspiration. The Royal Exhibition Building and the Carlton gardens are but two. Every time I see the Royal Exhibition Building I remember the Historical association that it has with the Victorian Artist Society building and the ‘Artist Carnival Exhibition’ held on 23rd to 29th October 1895 which helped pay out the amount of 2000 pd owed from the new building at 430 Albert St, East Melbourne. One of the Presidents of the ‘Victorian Academy of Arts’ and then the 'Victorian Artist Society’ was John Mather in 1893–1901, 1906–1908 and then in 1911. John Mather along with George Fincham was involved with the Murals in the Royal Exhibition Building. The French Fountain dates from the 1878 Paris International Exhibition.
