This painting is inspired by my deeply cherished memories of spending time at the Carlton Gardens and the iconic Royal Exhibition Building fountain. Using a realistic perspective, the artwork captures a fleeting moment in time around an unchanging sculpture. It focuses on a part of the historic Hochgurtel Fountain (1880), contrasting a sculpted mermaid and playing children with the fluid, living world around them. On a tranquil winter afternoon, local ducks and birds bring the serene scene to life: some swim through the waters, others tuck their heads into their feathers to rest, and some seem to whisper their own quiet stories.
