Samantha Qiao explores the rhythm of urban life by capturing the hidden narratives of our shared streets. Backed by a decade of commercial gallery representation and consecutive annual watercolour exhibitions in Wellington, New Zealand, her recent relocation to Melbourne marks a mature evolution in her visual language.
Her current body of work marks a decisive shift away from traditional street realism, evolving instead into a fractured, geometric Cubist and Modernist style. This aesthetic pivot directly engages with the unique architectural geometry and deep-seated modernist history that defines the Melbourne landscape, translating the city's physical structure into abstract spatial experiences.
Technically, Samantha challenges conventional material boundaries through the innovative application of watercolour on canvas. By freeing the fluid, translucent qualities of the watercolour medium from behind heavy glass frames and working directly onto textured canvas surfaces, she strips away the traditional barriers between the viewer and the artwork.
The resulting paintings create a highly contemporary, tactile viewing experience that redefines how watercolour is perceived in a contemporary art space.
