The highlight of the Victorian Artists Society's exhibition calendar sees peer-voted finalists across three Seasonal Select exhibitions present works for consideration in the $17,000 Hylton Mackley Artist of the Year Award.

Sponsored by the Mackley Family, this award is named for Mr Hylton Mackley AM (Hon) FVAS, who served as Treasurer from 2016-2023. Working alongside his wife, Eileen Mackley AM VAS FVAS, he oversaw the restoration of the Society's heritage-listed galleries, preserving a building that has housed artists' work since 1874.

The winning artist receives both the major prize and an invitation to hold a solo exhibition in the VAS Cato Gallery. Other prizes include the Members' Choice Award and the Noel Waite AO Exhibitors' Choice Award.

Award

The Victorian Artists Society proudly announces 2025 Major Prize $17,000, the Hylton Mackley Artist of the Year Award. VAS invites new and existing members to enter the VAS Seasonal Select Exhibitions and be eligible for peer selection into this prestigious Artist of the Year Award. 

Eligibility

Artists must be a 2025 VAS Member and exhibit in at least 2 of our 3 seasonal shows to be eligible for peer vote into the Artist of the Year Exhibition. Each seasonal show also has its own $1500 prize.

Autumn 27 March-13 April    Winter 17 July-3 August   Spring 4-21 September

Finalists will be invited to submit up to 3 works for the Artist of the Year Exhibition, 19 November-14 December. The prize will be celebrated with a black tie (optional) awards evening on Saturday December 6 2025.
