Human Nature explores the idea that humans are not separate from nature but intrinsically connected to it. This ceramic bust is made from clay (fired and glazed). Clay, a natural material taken from the earth, reinforces the connection between the human body and the natural world.
The surface of the sculpture has been incised with imagery of a tree growing and forming the spine, along with grasses and plants incised across the skin. These carved markings symbolise nature as a living presence within the human body, suggesting that we are not simply surrounded by nature, but are nature ourselves.
The work reflects the interrelationship, embodiment, and interconnection between human life and the natural environment. It is a reminder that our bodies, like the landscape, grow, change, and return to the earth, and that the boundary between human and nature is far less defined than we often believe.
