Chrysanthemums bloom in the autumn, heralding the coming of winter, which symbolizes the virtue of resisting all adversity. Therefore, the ancient literati called chrysanthemums one of the four gentlemen of flowers. It is also the favourite flower of Tao Yuanming (365–427), a great Chinese poet.
