In the 1646 text 'Pseudodoxia Epidemica', Thomas Browne tackled (amongst other commonly presumed truths of the day) the idea of the existence of unicorns. He did not, however, debunk the unicorn—rather he indicated a number of animals with a 'unique horn' such as the narwhale and rhinoceros. This painting indicates the various material manifestations of the unicorn found today—in plastics, wooden beads, and faux fur. I am interested in materiality and illusion: here, these objects pretending to be something other, are rendered in blobs and strokes of paint on a 2D surface giving the illusion of something else.
