Each island represents some form of protection or security. Many are in some way in mortal danger despite their best efforts. This was painted before Trump started building his wall!
The things depicted include reminders of mass genocide, of war, and the people who go missing in times of political power struggles.
I explored many the ways we experience security in the world, both good and bad.
