At the core of my art practice lies the figure, a concern for composition and a commitment to working from life. The purpose of it all is to search for and record the truth of what I see. The outcome considers the boundary between the corporeal and the ethereal and the dynamic between artist and muse. To make this drawing, I worked from direct observation of a life model. A desire to be true to my subjective experience guided every drawing decision. Forms were emphasised with pencil and white chalk, or erased and sanded back, based the hierarchy of what drew my eye. Throughout this process, the overwhelming feeling in the studio was one of both vitality and deep peace, where edges separating the living body and the negative space it inhabited relaxed. This feeling is what I sought to understand and record.
