Untutored Life Drawing & Portraiture Sessions

These sessions are untutored and suitable for artists who can work confidently on their own. All experience levels are welcome, for those who want to draw or paint the human form in a relaxed and quiet environment.

Artists need to bring their own materials. We supply easels and tables.

Non-members are welcome to attend.

No bookings are required. Cash or eftpos is to be paid to the class monitor on the day.

Please be aware that these sessions feature male and female nude models.

Artists must be 16+ and will need to show proof of age. Attendees aged 16 to 18 must provide proof of consent from a parent or guardian.

Social Still Life

Social Still Life at VAS

Social Still Life monthly sessions for both beginner and experienced artists. A balanced creative relaxed session for socialising and painting.

Basic paper and drawing tools will be available for use, but artists are encouraged to bring along their own preferred supplies to get the most out of their experience.

The session will focus on a still life, such as florals, as a subject that beginners can feel comfortable with, but experienced artists can explore and experiment. Painters with some experience can paint from life. Beginners can choose to have more guidance from the monitor.

Included in the ticket price is a complimentary glass of wine. Attendees are welcome to bring along light snacks to enjoy throughout the session!

Plein Air

Join VAS Teaching Artist Robert Kelly to explore the local parks and street surrounding Victorian Artists Society and practice the discipline of plein air painting.

We will cover a variety of topics including:
- Materials and set up
- Composition
- Tones/values
- Colour
- Edges
- Paint application/quality

The courses is primarily one on one critiques. With a few demonstrations/initial talks to commence the lessons, especially earlier in the course.

The aim of the course is to enhance our visual understanding of the world and how to replicate that in a realistic way through the medium of cool paint using traditional materials and techniques. By the end we should have the skills necessary to feel confident heading out into the world on our own painting adventures!
