The title is a reference to 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The original under-painting was done in 2008 and I called it 'dreamscape' then—you can see traces of some ghostly faces if you look closely. In recent times I've been painting and drawing lots of birds for a poetic project with a friend. I observe birds in nature, study them in books and watch videos of birds in flight to capture expressive moments in flight, then trace those movement drawings and cut out shapes from old paintings. So this is another work of layers, that for me resonates with Coleridge's poem about human transgression and the power of nature.
