Robert Charles Hitchcock is known for his life size sculptures. In the 1970s, he began to receive increasingly
significant recognition, include a series of sculptures of the Russian Ballet Dancer Rudolf Nureyev and
sculpture of Leonard Cohen, Rod McKuen, Professor Ian Constable, Beethoven, Robbie Burns. His recent
work consists of three over life size SAS figures in various uniforms from 1957. I was unable to separate Robert from sculpting, even during painting his portrait. I feel like sculpting is a
part of his body. I was impressed how his hands give dimension and life to a piece of dead sculpting material
and I wanted the portrait to convey this.
