This painting depicts a Sri lankan Kandyan Chieftain wearing traditional Nilame costume in the foreground. This particular Nilame costumes were traditionally reserved for the aristocracy of the the central part of Sri Lanka. The jackets often had particularly large puffed sleeves and were beautifully decorated with detailed embroidery as this is.
