Inspired by 17th Century Dutch still lives and the Preraphaelite movement, I wanted to tell a story with the objects in this still life. I collected antique items, bundles of herbs, and most notably a dead crow to create the scene.
The painting explores historical instances of witchcraft and alchemy and places them into an Australian context by including Australian Eucalyptus and a native corvid. I was heavily inspired by the Australian Gothic genre of writing and art.
