Clouds Hill was originally built around 1808 as a simple forester's dwelling. In 1922 T.E. Lawrence (AKA "Lawrence of Arabia") leased it and largely reconstructed it from 1922 to 1934. It was his home until his death in 1935. Lawrence left the cottage to his brother, who gave it to the National Trust in 1936. It has been preserved pretty much as it was during Lawrence's lifetime and is open to the public.
