This picture depicts a person in drug and alcohol recovery who also has a broken leg. The picture is designed to show how we find it easier to relate to a physical illness than an addiction. Like the sitter, the dog too sits in the shadows of the addiction. The dog is turned away from the sitter to suggest a sense of uneasiness. The sitter, aware of their ambiguous social position, faces the viewer full on, with an open posture and resigned smile despite the surrounding darkness.
