Description
In this Masterclass, Ray will teach you his approach to painting the portrait in oils. He will begin by introducing his materials and will then do a quick demonstration of how he paints his portraits. You will then work along with Ray through each stage of the painting - from the basic ‘drawing’, then putting in the darks, refining the portrait utilising the background, the block in and application of colour and rendering the painting.
Ray will discuss capturing a likeness through observation, measurement, modelling, tone and colour. All while working from a live model! Notes will also be provided.
This masterclass will be held in our upstairs galleries alongside our 2025 VAS Maritime Exhibition. Observers are welcome!

Ray Wilson
Ray enjoys tonal impressionist oil painting, the study of light, in the tradition of early Australian artists, particularly those influenced by Max Meldrum. He paints all genres and his aim in painting is to keep the artwork simple and ‘painterly.’
