Thuan is an old friend and the least self-conscious person I know. I asked if I could paint a portrait of him when previously I have done many paintings of animals. This is my first human portrait and I had to keep reminding myself that humans are animals too. His hair was inspired by the feathers I painted on a penguin recently, while parts had different animal inspirations. I now wonder why I hadn't created portraits of people before. My style bears some relationship to post-impressionism, since I use saturated colours and create images largely through textures such as Pointillism.
