Victorian Artists Society Annual General Meeting

The Victorian Artists Society Annual General Meeting was held last night and VAS Council Member Mark Bagally was elected as President.

Mark Bagally is an artist from Torquay on the Surfcoast of Victoria and has been painting since the late 1990s, finally taking the plunge into full time in 2016. His journey began with experimenting in oil and he tried various mediums and genres until finally returning to oil and finding his niche as a representational landscape and marine painter.

Mark is a dedicated painter who does something art related every day, whether it be practical of theory based or a combination of both. He is an avid collector and reader of art books, both historical and technical and is constantly engaged in self-education. Mark’s studio is full of art books, videos and other art related educational material. In 2019 he completed a Certificate IV in Visual Arts.

Mark’s works have been exhibited at various Victorian and interstate art shows and he has been the recipient of several awards including winner of the National Contemporary Art Award 2019. He has held successful solo and group exhibitions in Victoria.

Although he enjoys working 'in studio', his real passion is painting outdoors en plein air. Mark has travelled quite extensively throughout the country in pursuit of this passion, drawing much inspiration for marine paintings from the Great Ocean Road, which is on the doorstep of where he lives. He regularly travels throughout Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania painting and gathering reference material for rural landscape works which are his preference to paint.

Enjoying the challenge of creating a believable impression of a scene, he is inspired by renowned past and present Australian landscape impressionists, several of whom he has had the pleasure of being tutored by over the years at various advanced workshops. Mark believes the key to his progression has been lots of practice (brush miles) and a disciplined and quite intensive self-education regime.

Mark is affiliated with several art societies, including exhibiting member on council of the Victorian Artists Society (VAS); National Vice President and exhibiting member of the Australian Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) and founder and exhibiting artist with the Brandon Circle Melbourne.
