In this workshop, participants will develop a single oil painting of the portrait sitter over three days.
The workshop will look at efficient, repeatable ways of taking a complex, three-dimensional form (in this case, the human head) and translating that onto a two-dimensional surface. We will start with a simplified drawing on our canvases, in paint or in charcoal, and gradually sculpt that over the three days, building towards a luminous, full-contrast oil painting. Participants will also be introduced to a system of mixing a ‘flesh’ palette that aims to strike a balance between traditional and more modern understandings of colour theory.

We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
