Leah Sawyer is an Australian artist whose practice spans graphic design, photography and object-based disciplines, with a longstanding focus on material processes and environmental concerns. Trained in graphic design and commercial photography, they worked extensively in photographic printing, developing a sensitivity to surface, light and the physical qualities of images.
These interests culminated in their first solo exhibition, A Place in the Sun, which examined the fragility of nature within distinctly manmade environments. Grounded in environmental awareness, the work reflected on the pressures human activity places on the natural world.
This concern with material ethics later led to the establishment of an independent design studio focused on sustainable jewellery, where responsible sourcing and production became central to their creative approach.
Now returning to their fine art practice, Leah is re-engaging with the themes of place, fragility and environmental uncertainty through a new body of oil paintings, translating photographic ways of seeing into painterly form.
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
