My work has always begun in my sketchbook. They hold precious reminders of what I love to paint and draw while illustrating progression within my practice. As my work has become less literal, my painting now directly references the drawings in my sketchbook, loose and gestural, informing my oil paintings.
On day 1 we'll working from a still life set up and using whatever medium you are comfortable with (gauche, watercolours, graphite, acrylic), you will explore your own visual language in your sketchbook. We will also look at how other artists, both historical and contemporary, have used their drawings to inform their work. From these drawings you will then work towards a small still life painting in oil (or acrylic), using a classical underpainting technique.
Day 2 will focus on basic colour theory, and working on the final layers of your work. Although the purpose of this two-day workshop is not to complete a finished painting, but rather to learn how our drawings can inform our paintings.
