Born and raised in Melbourne within an unconventional, artistic environment, my practice is informed by a lifetime immersed in the visual arts. After studying painting in the 90s, I established a small gallery in the early 2000s and facilitated a long-standing life drawing group. Years of operating a studio and teaching have solidified my belief that beauty comes from the harmonic arrangement, or balance, of opposing forces. In fact all complexity in the universe emerges from the interplay of contrasts, such as light and dark, form and space, or hot and cold
I am passionate about painting that resonates directly with the mechanics of human vision, as a pathway to the heart and mind. Especially the traditions of Tonal Realism and Impressionism. My work is an inquiry into the Science of Appearances, layered with emotion or narratives but ultimately seeking a sophistication in simplicity. Where a single intentional brushstroke carries a wealth of information. By prioritising the behaviours of light over superficial detail, I aim for an economy of means that favours sensation over description, to communicate emotion
Executing my work through a direct, freehand methodology, I utilise smooth grounds, stiff hog bristle brushes and forgo hand support or corrective glazes to rely on a primary physical connection between eye and shoulder. This approach demands absolute clarity of intent, ensuring each gesture remains a definitive, unedited response to the subject. I strive for a truthful record of a hunt for the essential; a resolved transmission of light, form, and the raw honesty of the human hand
I'm available as an art tutor and for commissions in oil paint or other mediums
