Old and New Brunswick by Joe Whyte, First Prize 2023
The Winter is one of three Select Exhibitions held each year by VAS. Votes cast by exhibiting artists are used to decide the list of candidates for the Artist of the Year Award exhibition. The Winter Exhibition features a first prize of $1000, and a sculpture prize of $500.
This year, the Winter Select Exhibition also incorporates a special award, the ‘Walter Withers Award’, sponsored by John Withers and Andrew Mackenzie OAM Hon FVAS. The prize is a beautifully etched medallion engraved with the winner’s name. The award will be restricted to a landscape painting in the mediums of oil or watercolour, in line with Walter Withers’ painting style.
Andrew Mackenzie is the judge for this aspect of the exhibition and John Withers will present the medallion. The winner will be chosen from the entries in the Winter Select Exhibition.
The judge for the Winter Select is Paul McDonald Smith OAM FVAS FRSA.
Works entered into the VAS Winter Exhibition must not have been previously exhibited at VAS. Digital works will not be included in this exhibition.
See the current exhibition terms and conditions here.
A selection process will be undertaken by the VAS Council Select Committee, based on quality, execution and presentation of works. Unsuccessful entrants will be advised by email: however, please note that no feedback will be offered.
All current members of VAS are encouraged to vote in the VAS Winter Exhibition. Votes go towards inclusion in the Artist of the Year Award Exhibition.
The opening and awards presentation event for the VAS Winter Select Exhibition is on Saturday 20 July from 7pm.
You can bring your artwork into the building for the VAS Winter Select Exhibition on:
Wednesday 17 July, 11am to 3:30pm.
Members may submit up to 1 artwork and 3 sculptures.
The entry fee is $20 per artwork ($30 for large works with a combined height and width of over 180cm) and can be paid upon entry. The minimum sales price for works is $400: any works entered for less than this will be listed as $400 by default.
If you have work on show in the 2024 Portraiture Exhibition, you can drop off and collect your works on the same day.
We encourage you to take up the option of entering work on our online gallery.
Online Entries for the Winter Select will open from Wednesday 3 July.
Click on the link to view the instructional video below showing you how to enter your art work online. Online entries must be uploaded to the online gallery by Tuesday 16 July for processing.
Please note that this is a two step process. You must first upload your artwork to your profile, and then enter it into the exhibition. Simply uploading the work does not automatically enter it into the exhibition.
Remember to bring your artwork into the galleries if you enter the work online.
Online viewing for the VAS Winter Exhibition will open on Monday 22 July with all artworks for sale.
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
