Description

Join us for a special lunchtime event as two distinguished authors delve into the lives of remarkable artistic figures with deep connections to the Victorian Artists Society.

Professor Peter Tregear OAM will share insights from his compelling biography of Fritz Bennicke Hart (1874–1949)—a prolific composer, conductor, and educator whose profound influence on Australian musical life included years of teaching and leadership at VAS’s own Conservatorium.

Dr Julie Cotter will discuss her latest work on the trailblazing artist and activist Portia Geach, the first Australian woman accepted into the Royal Academy of Arts in London. A dedicated exhibitor at VAS from 1901 to 1955, Geach remains a towering figure in Australian art history.

The session will be facilitated by Anne Scott Pendlebury, our resident archivist, who will set the stage for a discussion through the rich artistic legacies these figures left behind.

Don’t miss this engaging dialogue at the Gallery – free and open to all. Grab a coffee and immerse yourself in stories of art, music, and the enduring impact of creativity.

Admission is free, RSVP appreciated!

Acknowledgment of traditional owners.

We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
