Gwendoline Krumins VAS FVAS
Gwendoline Krumins is celebrated as a new Fellow for her extraordinary commitment and service to the arts. Gwendoline has been a cornerstone of the Victorian Artists Society and a Signatory Member since 1996, serving as both member and convenor of the Friday Group of Painters. This dedicated studio group meets weekly to paint from the model, fostering a collaborative environment where artists of varied backgrounds, styles, and abilities share methods and insights. The group continues the legacy of mentorship established by the late Bill Harding, encouraging one another in their artistic development.
A self-described "tonal impressionist," Gwendoline's practice is rooted in drawing and direct observation. Her weekly figure painting sessions have resulted in an extensive body of work, which she now preserves in handmade books. As an avid traveller, she captures everyday life and street scenes in sketchbooks, responding to the sensation of each moment. These drawings become the foundation for studio paintings created from memory, sketches, and photographic references.
Her achievements include winning the VAS Portrait Exhibition in 2017 and the Select Exhibition in both 2018 and 2021, with numerous Highly Commended awards throughout. She was honoured with the VAS Mavis Little Artist of the Year Award in 2021. As a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, she won the Annie Davison Award in 2020 and has received several awards since 2010.
Beyond her own practice, Gwendoline remains active in the broader artistic community through demonstrations, exhibition judging, and teaching. Her Fellowship recognises not only her artistic excellence but her unwavering commitment to nurturing creativity in others.
