Born in Melbourne in 1916, Irene Hill studied at the National Gallery School with William Beckwith McInnes and Charles Wheeler and became a full time professional portrait painter. For a number of years she worked with the Eye and Ear Hospital in East Melbourne painting irises for the Surgery Department in the years before the advent of modern medical photography.
