Term 2 drawing will focus on the art of the sketch. You will be working from life studio set ups, plein air, people, urban settings with photographs, completing 1, 2 or even 3 drawings per session.
Why sketch?
With a sketch you can work freely, loosen up and be unafraid! If the drawing goes wrong, you haven’t invested hours in the work and can easily begin again. You can mix things up, experiment and play, enjoying the process without the stress of getting it ‘right’. Sketching encourages exploration, imagination and creativity – it can be the basis for a finished work. But most important of all, it means you will practice all those important things like observation, perspective, proportions, light and shade and tonal variations.
I have many, many sketchbooks. Full, half full, not started but kept because I will use one day. When I travel a sketchbook always comes with me. I often keep one in the glovebox in my car, in my handbag or jacket pocket.
Sketching becomes a habit and a way to record your ideas, travel experiences, people or just life in general. Your sketch drawings can be a quick 5-minute impression or a longer more detailed 1 or two hour drawing. People often ask me where I get my ideas from for my finished drawings – most were started in a sketchbook!
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
