This 5-week intensive short course will focus on the skills needed to paint the portrait from life. Utilising a live model each week, Lucy Maddox will present structured steps to sketching, measuring, blocking in and capturing a likeness in paint. In the first class we will complete a tonal study, while in the remaining weeks we will engage in two long portrait poses, each completed over two weeks.
Students are welcome to work in either acrylics or oils. However, we will utilise safe painting practices - please refrain from bringing or using solvents (including turpentine) or toxic mediums. Non-toxic mediums are welcome.
For the first week, bring at least a blue, brown and Titanium White (ideally Payne’s Grey and Burnt Sienna, though other possibilties like Raw Umber/Burnt Umber and Ultramarine/Cobalt blue are also good).
For later weeks, you will need:
Vermilion (or Cadmium Red)
Ivory Black
Yellow Ochre
Quinacridone or Alizarin Crimson
Azo/Nickel Azo/Indian Yellow
Burnt Umber
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
