Floral arrangement with Lilies under strong VAS studio light in Lee Machelaks’s class.I saw it as an opportunity to really explore strong tonal contrasts evident in the work of many of the Australian tonalists especially Max Meldrum and Percy Leason. Again, the lighting cast a dramatic shadow on the table top, imitating the sculptural look of the flowers. In my previous work I would have softened and lightened the shadows but this time decided to trust what I saw and lean into the drama. I had also previously thought shadows were only a supporting player in a scene but again decided to explore bringing them to the fore.
