Ada May Plante was born in New Zealand and moved to East Melbourne in 1890.She studied at the National Gallery School under Bernard Hall and Fred McCubbin and was a contemporary of Margaret Preston and Max Meldrum.
After returning from studies in Europe Ada exhibited at the 1905 VAS Winter exhibition and continued to exhibit there until 1916. She was one of the founding members of the Post impressionist Melbourne Contemporary Art Group whose members included Jock Frater. Ada lived in Darebin Melbourne as part of an artists’ colony and in 1945 finally held her first and only solo exhibition.
