Sarah Ackland: Journey with the Pencil

Location: Cato Gallery

3 Jun 2026 – 14 Jun 2026

Meet the Artist: June 6-7 from 1pm

Journey with the Pencil is a body of artwork that was born out of the desire to improve Sarah’s understanding of tone. Something that started off as a study of tone to improve her watercolour painting, became a passion and a collection of detailed drawings of mostly trees, landscapes and botanical work in graphite.

This exhibition is a collection of work that has been created over the last couple of years with the fascination of striving to push the boundaries of graphite and enjoying what the medium has to offer. During this journey Sarah has found that when colour is taken away and the image is reduced to line and tone, much strength and subtleness can be achieved.

Sarah Ackland is an Australian artist who currently works primarily in graphite, but also has a love for watercolour.  With an interest in tree portraits, bush scenes, landscape and botanical, she is constantly inspired by the Australian landscape, the plant life and its rugged beauty. She enjoys working tonally in graphite and seeing the results that come from working in the medium. Having grown up on a farm in the Western District of Victoria, she has had a love for the Australian landscape and nature from an early age. Whether it was helping her Mother in the garden or her Father out on the farm, it was there the seeds of her inspiration were sown.
