Rachel Dettmann-Smith: Visual Language

Location: Mackley Members' Room

21 Oct 2025 – 17 Nov 2025
Visual Language is a solo exhibition of oil paintings by Rachel Dettmann Smith, featuring a selection of works painted directly from life.

The exhibition includes landscapes, still life, and portraits, all produced using a tonal painting method that prioritizes the accurate observation of light and form. Each work is developed through sustained observation, focusing on tonal relationships rather than outlines or colour-based interpretation.

Rachel’s approach is grounded in traditional oil painting techniques and informed by her early training as a ceramic painter. She has also studied and practiced tonal methods of painting, applying these principles consistently across her subject matter. Based in rural central Victoria, her practice is shaped by her immediate surroundings and by the process of working directly from observation.

In line with the quote by Fr Don Gallagher, “I am one of those people who can't imagine anything more interesting than the world as it is,” this work treats the visible world as a complete and sufficient subject of study.

Visual Language presents a cohesive body of work that demonstrates the ongoing relevance of observational painting in contemporary practice. It aims to offer viewers a direct encounter with the discipline of seeing, through the approach of tonal realism.
