Charles Bush was born in Brunswick East in 1919 and studied at the National gallery School Melbourne. He served in WW2 in an artillery survey unit and from 1943 was employed as a war artist serving in PNG and Timor. Charles travelled to Britain after the War and studied in London with Bernard Meninsky and exhibited at the royal Academy. He was a drawing master at the NGV from 1953-54.His paintings won more than fifty awards and his work is held in the NGA and the Australian War Memorial Canberra.
