Karlis Mednis was born in Russia in 1910 and studied at the Riga School of Art Latvia before emigrating to Australia in 1949. A painter of draughtsman like qualities Karlis worked with various media, frequently painting cityscape, still life and marine subjects.
His work is represented in the National Collection Canberra and several provincial galleries. Karlis was a foundation member of the VAS Art School where he taught between 1960 and 1971. In 1979 he was named VAS Artist of the Year.
In addition to the VAS Cato Watercolour Prize, Karlis won the Latvian Art Festival Prize New York and Melbourne’s Camberwell Rotary.
