Walter Withers carried on the role of the Heidelberg School as an artistic community by taking over ‘Charterisville’, a spacious mansion and subletting it as a studio to other artists. His wife gave piano lessons there while Withers opened a studio in Collins Street where he gave classes and exhibited. In 1895 the NGV bought one of his best known paintings Tranquil Winter and 2 years later he won the first Wynne Prize given by the AGNSW. He became President of the VAS and was a trustee of the NGV until his death in 1914 at his bushland home at Eltham.

Acknowledgment of traditional owners.

We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
