Artist Profile – Ian Duncan
“If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” - Vincent Van Gogh”
An interest in drawing and painting has always been part of my life. I especially enjoy the work of Arthur Streeton and his peers. I love the raw beauty of nature and typically my paintings are landscapes with seascapes being a favourite area of interest. I generally work best where a scene brings back a good memory or natures colour, light, weather or movement excites or triggers an emotion in myself. The ocean and its various moods always works in this way for me.
I predominantly work in oils now but have also enjoyed using pastels, Charcoal and pencil in the past. My preference is to work with large canvases as I strive to capture the movement, colour and natural beauty of each scene. My primary focus is on the beauty of nature and I eliminate manmade elements from the scene to ensure this is highlighted in the painting while recognising that sometimes the manmade elements and people are required to capture the mood or energy of a location.
Most weeks I will spend 1-2 days painting in the studio utilising photos as the basis for my composition. Lately I have started working outdoors sketching or painting studies in oils and working from these to create the painting. My work can be seen on Instagram: under iand_artist_geelong, Facebook: under @iandartistgeelong and Gallery247. My work is regularly on display at the Eagles Nest Gallery – Aireys Inlet and I am available to work with people on commissions of scenes that evoke the feeling or memory they have or want .
