Heart as Calm as Still Water

This artwork, inspired by a small study that I painted plein air at Tasmania's Bay of Fires, captures the striking contrast of vibrant orange lichen on the rocks against the ever-shifting colours of the sea as the weather rolls in. What drew me to this scene was the contrast between the small, relatively undisturbed rock pool and the rough sea. The juxtaposition of the calm water against the rough waves forms an intriguing dynamic, echoing the essence of the Chinese proverb Heart as Calm as Still Water. I was reminded of the delicate balance between calm and chaos in life. The calmness of the water in the rock pool serves as a metaphor for inner tranquillity amidst external turbulence and the unwavering spirit that I aspire to maintain, even as I navigate through the changes and challenges in my artistic journey. This painting not only captures a specific moment in nature but also reflects a personal philosophy, symbolising resilience and calm amidst the ebb and flow of life's uncertainties.
