Hazel Westbury
I have always loved to draw, and since childhood I have been fascinated by the work of Leonardo da Vinci, not only for his artistry but for his curiosity about life. Painting has arrived later in my studio practice and in recent years Gippsland landscapes have been the focus. I maintain a studio there, to capture rural and alpine landscapes.
Education
Although I received entry to Edinburgh College of Art, my conservative parents insisted on a university education, so I crossed the road from school, to study Psychology and Philosophy at University of Edinburgh in the 1970s.
Undeterred, I got up early each morning and went out on sketching trips before lectures and exhibited at the Edinbugh Festival.Migrating to Australia in 1983, I studied Art and Design at Wangaratta College of Tafe, before moving to Melbourne in 1985.
More recently VAS has been the inspiration, taking me into painting in oils in the classical method, tutored by Robery Kelly, a master of the subject.
I hope that this immersion will support my life-drawing, which has been a constant over my artistic life. In addition to drawing and painting I create works for dance, with story and costume design as part of my practice.
