The face is, of course, the gateway to our thoughts and emotions. But it is not the only way to them. I wanted to paint my friend Dylan at a time in his life where change was met with uncertainty, and it was through his body that this tension could be captured. We see him in a quiet moment of vulnerability, our presence possibly unknown. In this moment, fingers pressing into muscle, a birthmark exposed, Dylan’s back tells us more than his face may have revealed.
